Saree cancer: is it real? What physicians say is as follows :

saree cancer and dhoti cancer which refer to the same illness, were first used in 1945. This was because of the repeated wearing of tight sarees, dhotis, or even jeans around the waist. Are you familiar with the term saree cancer ? No, wearing a saree does not automatically mean you develop cancer.

The phrase refers to lacing the petticoat overly tightly, although it actually causes inflammation around the waist. This only occurs with frequent wear of clothing that is too tight, particularly around the waist. The phrase was initially used in 1945 in reference to the similar illness known as dhoti cancer which was brought on by the repeated wearing of tight sarees, dhotis, or even jeans around the waist. This causes persistent friction or irritation in the area and may cause cancer.

Although it is common, saree cancer is extremely uncommon outside of the Indian subcontinent.

Physicians said that wearing tight sarees caused waist dermatoses (skin lesions) in the Journal of the Indian Medical Association in 2011 after reporting two cases of this ailment.

Waist dermatoses have been linked to the continuous and extended wearing of this outfit (saree). The name saree cancer refers to this type of waist cancer, which is caused by dermatoses around the waist that eventually develop into malignancy, as stated in the study. In order to learn more about this kind of skin cancer—which is also referred to as waistline cancer—India Today spoke with specialists.

This kind of cancer is called squamous cell carcinoma, according to Dr. N Sapna Lulla, Lead Consultant, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Aster CMI Hospital. A kind of skin cancer that can arise in places exposed to continuous irritation or friction is squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), sometimes referred to as saree cancer. Tightly worn sarees, petticoats, dhotis, and even jeans might raise the risk of SCC at the waist, albeit they are not just related to sarees Dr. Sapna Lulla stated.

Loosening the belt and using emollient (moisturizing) lotions at night will help prevent chronic inflammation at the waist, according to Consultant surgical oncologist Dr. Nataraj Naidu works at SPARSH Hospital in Bangalore. But according to Dr. Naidu, just because this illness is named after a significant article of apparel in directly cause cancer.

saree cancer may be deceptive Dr. Naidu stated, even though SCC can arise on the skin subjected to continuous irritation, such as the abdomen owing to saree wearing. The cause of this disease, according to Dr. Triveni Arun Akkiraju, Consultant in Obstetrics & Gynecology at Rainbow Children’s Hospital, is the petticoat rather than the saree.

Skin changes are caused by the inner skirt that is worn below the saree to anchor it, which is wrapped too tightly around the waist every day. Skin pigmentation and scaling are the results of continuous wear. According to Dr. Akkiraju, this persistent inflammation eventually results in ulceration, which then progresses to cancer.

The experts advised being aware of the skin alterations around the waist caused by the tight saree knot.  According to Dr. Akkiraju, most women are unaware of this until it becomes chronic.

According to the expert, “the hot, humid tropical climate of the subcontinent exacerbates the continuous irritation, and unwilling self-hygiene, especially in rural areas, results in accumulation of irritants like dust, sweat in the cord producing skin changes.”

Cancer symptoms related to the waist :

  • Red, irritated areas everywhere.
  • The development of ulcers.
  • Protruding lumps close to the waist.

Select looser, more breathable materials, make sure you follow good cleanliness and skincare practices, and take breaks from long-term saree usage. It is also crucial to regularly examine your skin for any unexpected changes,” Dr. Naidu said.

Address the symptoms to prevent worsening.
