Prime Minister Narendra Modi faced flak from Congress on Wednesday for claiming that the world was unaware of Mahatma Gandhi till Richard Attenborough’s 1982 film ‘Gandhi’ was released.
Modi asserted in an interview with ABP that Mahatma Gandhi was an eminent individual who was unknown to the rest of the world. He also questioned whether it was not the nation’s responsibility to achieve Gandhi’s degree of worldwide prominence over the last 75 years.

He went on to say that if the world was aware of other leaders like Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela, Gandhi was just as important. If anyone has harmed Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy, it is the retiring Prime Minister himself.

Jairam Ramesh, a senior Congress lawmaker, accused the prime minister of “destroying the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi” on Twitter.
“It seems the outgoing prime minister lives in a world where Mahatma Gandhi was not recognized worldwide before 1982,” Ramesh posted to X.
