A hobby lifestyle is one of my all-time favorite topics to enthuse about. I enjoy talking about it and seeing people realize that with a few small modifications, they, too, can live a happy, hobby-oriented existence. I live my life as a pastime, and I am physically living proof of the joys of life.
First, let’s start with what I mean by a pastime lifestyle! A hobby lifestyle is one in which you choose to be happier and find joy every day. It’s waking up in the morning and asking oneself, ‘How can I make today happier?’ Finally, it’s about living life to the fullest and truly appreciating what you have. By fullest, I mean in its purest form, daily fullness, rather than bucket list items every day!
A hobby lifestyle involves making modest modifications that make you happy; it transforms your regular activities into something you like and ‘fills your cup.’
For example, if you truly despise preparing supper or find it difficult with your children there, how can you make this activity more enjoyable? Could you enlist the aid of your children? Teach them as you go, involving them in this important area of their day. Perhaps turning on the radio or watching your favorite TV show while cooking can make the everyday meal preparation more fun.
The key is to spread joy throughout the day
Other aspects of your day or week that you find tedious may be outsourced if you have the resources. Do you hate ironing? You already do it while watching TV, but it consumes too much of your weekend and pulls you away from your family when you could be doing something more meaningful and enjoyable. If you have the resources to outsource duties like this, do so. Remove this duty from your to-do list and free up some time to accomplish something else that provides you actual delight. This isn’t always going to be doing anything with your children; it may be going for a run, meeting relatives, or taking a simple candle-lit bubble bath – things that refresh you and make you happy.
Whether you work, own a business, or are a busy stay-at-home mother, there will be times of the week that you dread, but life is too short to live with dread on a daily or weekly basis. You must address it.
So, where do you start? Ask yourself these questions:
- What is the least enjoyable aspect of my day?
- Why does this aspect of my day bother me?
- What is it about the school run (for example) don’t I like?
- Why do I never feel rested? (Because on Sundays, I do XY&Z to prepare for school and job).
Sitting and asking yourself these questions, wondering why you despise specific portions of your routine so much, allows you to break down the process and focus on your ‘pain spot.’ Once you have sorted this out, you may start thinking about solutions. How can I fix this situation? How can I make this more fun for myself?
The next phase therefore is execution and intentionality. If we’re adopting the preparing supper example, you need to be intentional about applying your answer. You need to override your autopilot and guarantee you set up this new habit. If you’re pulling out all the ingredients for supper, don’t start until the radio is playing, or set up a station for the children to help at the same time. Your satisfaction comes from seeing that your idea worked, and you just enjoyed cooking the supper.
Similarly, if you are outsourcing something, do not replace it with another chore you dislike, such as cleaning the home; instead, replace it with something you enjoy or that will ‘fill your cup.’
If you believe you can’t change your everyday commute or wait in the cold at football practice, consider how you might enhance it. Take a flask of your favorite hot drink or put on your favorite pair of cozy boots.
How can a hobby-based lifestyle help you? Aside from increasing happiness, your well-being improves significantly. As you feel less anxious and more pleased, your levels of dopamine and endorphins rise, resulting in a positive loop in which your brain recognises how this task has benefitted you. Furthermore, and most crucially, greater happiness and optimism in the home inspires your children. They learn from you and react to your energy, feeling your tension. By eliminating that tension, replacing it instead with a positive reaction, you are changing your children’s thinking and how they will approach the things they don’t like performing.
The simple foundations of it is to infuse more joy into your everyday, to actually enjoy your day-to-day, in the knowing that everything within your power is joyful and without worry.
